The Black Hills National Forest has more than 30 campgrounds with nearly 700 sites, and Forest Recreation Management Inc. operates most of them. Their employees maintain the electric, sewer and water hook-ups at the developed sites and keep track of the vault toilets and potable water sources at the primitive sites. They also employ on-site hosts at about half of the campgrounds. Besides campgrounds, Forest Recreation Management also looks after picnic areas, lake marinas and other BHNF recreational facilities.

Visitors can reserve campsites through ReserveUSA or take their chances on finding open sites upon their arrival. By calling (605) 574-4402, visitors and travel information specialists can get local information from Forest Recreation Management staff members that ReserveUSA may not have. The fees in the Forest Service campgrounds range from $18 to $24 per night.
