Bike through the Black Hills

Bicycle Touring

Bicycle touring and pleasure riding on our wide-shouldered highways are popular in the Black Hills. Some of the favorite and most scenic rides are Rapid City to Mount Rushmore; the Needles Highway; Iron Mountain Road; Spearfish Canyon; and the Badlands Scenic Byway. County Road 323 between Keystone and Hill City is unique because it follows much of the 1880 Train route.

If highway touring isn’t your style or if you have younger children riding with you, a city bike path might be more to your liking. Rapid City boasts a 13.5 mile bikeway along Rapid Creek, and the cities of Spearfish and Sturgis also have paved bike paths. A portion of the Mickelson Trail takes you through historic Deadwood.

For your safety, wear a helmet and appropriate clothing. Bring plenty of water.

Check ahead to see if a trail pass or park pass is required. Entrance fees are charged at state and national parks. A trail pass is also required for the Mickelson Trail.

Don’t have a bike? Bicycles can be rented from several businesses, many which are located near the most popular trails. Some B&Bs and motels also rent bicycles.
