Winter Fun
Four distinct seasons in the great outdoors are some of the best reasons for living here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. And some of the best reasons for visiting here. The winter season gives us an excuse to savor the radiance and aroma of the fireplace, and to snuggle up with a blanket feels extra-good. Instead of dreading the cold season, we humor it, play it, embrace it and romance it.
Sometimes, winter visitors are astounded when they arrive in our foothills communities and find very little snow, Not to worry! A few miles farther - and 4,000 feet higher - it's four or five feet deep! The 7,000 ft. elevations of the Black Hills get dependable snows, averaging 150 inches a year. Because the winds come from the northwest, the moisture heavy clouds dump most of the snow on the northern Black Hills.
Temperatures in the Black Hills are usually warmer than the rest of South Dakota where it can get as cold as 30 degrees below. The Black Hills area will usually get one blizzard each winter (typically in February) and one cold snap (typically in January). Occasionally the entire area will see a brief spell of subzero temperatures. However, warmer weather returns quickly to the Black Hills. Chinook winds can also send the mercury into the 50s and 60s.
