For those who love history this Black Hills tour if for you. The Journey Museum & Learning Center in Rapid City takes you on a trek through time with interactive exhibits that bring together the history of the Western Great Plains and the Native Americans. It’s actually five museums in one starting with the 2.5 billion year old geological story of the mystical Black Hills when ancient seas covered the area. The Native American exhibit is the most popular of the five and features both traditional and contemporary artistry and culture. Since 1876, Deadwood has attracted fortune seekers and today is a destination for history buffs.

The Adams Museum in Deadwood brings to light that history. On display is Potato Creek Johnny’s 7.346 troy ounce gold nugget, the largest piece of gold found in the Black Hills. Also in Deadwood is the Days of 76 Museum housing one of the region’s most complete horse-drawn wagon collections and Firearms exhibits.

Three miles away in Lead, you’ll learn about our mining history at the Black Hills Mining Museum and Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center and Tour. What was once the northern hemispheres largest underground gold mining operation is today an underground science facility that supports world-leading research in particle physics.

Spearfish is home to the High Plains Western Heritage Center> honoring Old West Pioneers and American Indians. Natural history enthusiasts will find Hill City’s Museum at Black Hills Institute a treasure trove of amazing dinosaur, fossils and collectibles. It’s also home to T. rex who once roamed a seaway in central South Dakota.

The Hot Springs Mammoth Site is an active paleontological dig site which boasts the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world. Current count is 61.
