Ever wonder what lies at the end of those country roads along I-90, heading for the Badlands? Well, at the end of Fairview Road, the historic Triangle Ranch is nestled in a beautiful bend of the Bad River — 8 miles north of I-90 and 20 minutes from the Badlands National Park.
On your drive to the ranch, encircled by 360 degrees of blue South Dakota skies, view vast tracts of national grasslands to the west, old family ranches to the east and wildlife sightings the entire way, not to mention some friendly cows.
Badlands and a Good Country Road
As you enter our ranch gates, follow Recluse Road (named for our homestead Post Office, not a spider) a couple of miles and around the last bend, where you will see the iconic red roof of our “Spanish Castle on the Plains.” The centerpiece of Triangle Ranch Bed & Breakfast is our historic Sears “Alhambra Model” home. Your hosts will greet you on the front porch with that famous hospitality South Dakota is known for.
Civilization in “the Middle of Nowhere”
Feel the warmth of this six-generation ranch house in the mellow Craftsman interiors and the glow of its original crystal chandeliers. Upstairs, four gracious, private guestrooms offer comfort and astounding views from every window. You will find the authentically vintage Cowboy Carriage House in the backyard, offering perfect accommodations for families or a private couple’s getaway.
There is a playground just down the meadow and numerous yard games available.
For more extended stays, and larger groups, our much-acclaimed Cabin Under the Hill is just up the road, tucked in a peaceful spot along the river.
Meanwhile, at the Ranch
Here on the ranch, you’ll enjoy invigorating morning runs and peaceful sunset walks in the safety and quiet of the wide-open spaces. Whether stargazing, fossil hunting, birdwatching, cow watching, petting our horse or front porch sitting, your soul will be soothed by the peace of Triangle Ranch.
Did we mention our 5-star breakfasts? We’ll just refer you to TripAdvisor, New York Times “Travel,” SDPTV, RFDTV, KOTATV, Midwest Living, American Cowboy and Country Magazines. After 26 years, this “ain’t our first rodeo!”
Local Adventures, Wild or Tame
Badlands National Park and its crown jewel, the Sage Creek Wilderness Area, are just twenty minutes away. Be awe-inspired by the park’s remarkable landscapes, the changing of light and shadows and its wide array of indigenous prairie wildlife — including the infamous American bison. This beauty and the miles of hiking trails assure that your camera will not rest.
South of Badlands National Park, learn the history and culture of the Lakota people on Pine Ridge Reservation.
Juxtaposed beside these ancient Badlands and native culture is the Minuteman Missile Historic Site at Exits 131, 127 and 116. Tour and hear the story of this Cold War relic.
Thirty minutes from Triangle Ranch, have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see our breathtaking night skies at the Badlands Observatory viewing decks, equipped with personal telescopes. Schedule your visit online, have a little nap in your cozy accommodations at the ranch and set out for an eye-opening experience of the universe.
All roads, in these parts, lead to the world-famous Wall Drug Store. Be sure to take in this fantastic city-block-sized Western mall and colorful, vintage Western emporium/museum. Order up their signature homemade ice cream or donuts, accompanied by a cup of 5-cent coffee or free ice water. While the kids enjoy the backyard with a water park and an animated T.rex, check out their vast array of quality shops.
