Remembrance Day for The Battle of the Little Big Horn and Ruth Ziolkowski

The first night blast of the year is June 26. It celebrates the birthday of the late Mrs. Korczak (Ruth) Ziolkowski (1926 - 2014), wife of the late Crazy Horse sculptor.The June 26 blast also commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. The battle was June 25, 1876. Crazy Horse was a main strategist in the defeat of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his troops.
The public is welcome at the night blasts. After 7:00 p.m. on June 26th the Memorial gratefully accepts three cans of food per person for the KOTA Care and Share Food Drive in lieu of the regular admission fee. Because the night blasts are among the Memorial’s most popular events, the public is advised to arrive early. The restaurant at Crazy Horse closes at 4pm on the evenings of the night blasts but the Snack Shop remains open.

Deadweird

Come celebrate Halloween in Deadwood with Deadweird! This unique event promises a mix of crazy, spooky, and fun experiences. Hosted by Quality Brands of the Black Hills, Midco, and KEVN Black Hills Fox, this event is set in Deadwood's renowned locations. Attendees can look forward to live music, dancing, and costume contests.

Activities and Highlights

  • Monster Ball: Enjoy live music by Flannel and join the dancing at Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center. Win door prizes and cheer for People's Choice costume winners.
  • Costume Contest & Party: Get creative with your costume for a chance to win part of the $10,000 in cash and prizes at Outlaw Square and the Historic Franklin Hotel.

Kid-Friendly Frights and Family Fun

No one gets left out during Halloween in Deadwood. Younger attendees and families can enjoy a range of activities. 

  • Haunted Tours of the Broken Boot Gold Mine: For ages 12 and older, take a spooky candlelight tour 300 feet underground in a historic mine. Tours available on select days in October.
  • Trunk or Treat: On October 26, all ages are welcome to enjoy family-friendly trick-or-treating at the Days of ’76 Event Complex from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • KidWeird Halloween Event: For ages 12 and under, participating in the KidWeird Halloween event on October 31 at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center with costume contests and prizes.

History on the Lawn: The Past is Present

Portrait photographer and artist Kary Janousek from Fargo, North Dakota, will touch on the historical beginnings of photography and how it affected society.
Explaining briefly the process of wet plate collodion and its specific role in history from the 1850s to the late 1880s, and why it still has a place in modern society today.
The demonstration will pose a sitter, creating the plate, taking the exposure, and then fixing it on site for people to see the results.
Five addition sittings will be sold for $75 per sitting at 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, and 3:30 p.m. Bring a lunch and enjoy the Historic Adams House lawn; 12:00 noon; free for members and $5 for non-members.
In case of inclement weather, the lecture will be moved to the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC).

Practical Tips for an Elevated Experience

Blankets and camping chairs make for comfortable viewing. Hydrate well, but leave no trace behind. The visible morning launch is a photographer's dream, so don't forget your camera. Keep an eye on the weather and follow all instructions for safety. Finally, the evening "Light Up Downtown" is not to be missed. Flashlights and bug spray are must-haves for an illuminated night.

Deadwood Jam

The Deadwood Jam outdoor music festival returns this year, offering a fantastic lineup of bands at no charge. Held at Outlaw Square on historic Deadwood Main Street, this festival promises great music and good times in a beautiful setting.

Enjoy your favorite beer or wine while you listen to live performances, with open container policies valid on Friday from 5 – 10pm and Saturday from noon to 10pm. Just grab an official Deadwood Event Cup from various local establishments to participate.

  • Art and Jam Auction: Kicking off on Friday, this annual fundraiser at Jacobs Art Gallery features a live and silent auction with local Black Hills art, light hors d’oeuvres, and plenty of excitement.
  • Music Performances: From Burton Cummings and Dumpstaphunk to The Blind Boys of Alabama and Nathan McEuen, the lineup covers a range of genres.
  • Convenient Setup: Chairs can be set up at 3:00pm on Friday and 10:30am on Saturday, but they must be removed after the concert.

The festival includes (and encourages) local artisans, craftsperson's, woodworkers, jewelers, candle makers, food vendors and entertainers to participate in the festival. A children’s stage is also part of the event.
The event takes place over three day on the last full weekend of June.
